BACKYARD HOBBY FARMING

Owning a farm is a full-time job that requires long, hard hours, a decent chunk of land and, for those just getting started, some expensive startup costs. However, not all is lost for those who don't have the resources to go all in or who are still on the fence about the lifestyle overhaul. Hobby farming is an accessible alternative that can still provide you with many of the benefits of full-fledged farming.

Hobby farming has been increasing in popularity over the past few years because of its ease and adaptability for almost any lifestyle. While some hobby farmers sell the goods they produce, the focus is on the recreational aspect of farming without worrying about having to make a profit.

So, what’s the difference between a regular farm and a hobby farm?

Hobby farms can range in size from one acre to 50 and, as mentioned above, the purpose of having a hobby farm is for enjoyment (this is especially important come tax season). While the size and type of hobby farm varies, one thing is certain: doing what you love benefits your overall well-being.

Benefits of Hobby Farming

Hobby farming requires you to get moving and be out in nature, both of which are fantastic for your physical and mental health. You’ll feel your stress fade away and get a little workout in as you tend to your crops or animals. With more and more hobby farms popping up, you’ll be able to meet new people and be part of a growing community.

You’ll also get a major morale boost when you see (and taste) the results of all the hard work you’ve put into your farm. Plus, just think of all the time and money you’ll save! No more last-minute trips to the store when you realize you forgot the eggs — because the eggs are already in your own backyard.

Types of Hobby Farms

The type of farm you choose will first depend on any local laws and ordinances. Once you know what is and isn’t allowed in the area where you live, other deciding factors will include the amount of land you have, the climate and, of course, what interests you! We’ve gathered some common hobby farm features for you to consider.

Goats

Goats are one of the most beneficial animals to have on a hobby farm. In addition to producing milk that can be used for cooking, cheeses and soaps, they also serve as great weed whackers.

Chickens

Of course, chickens can be a great source of both eggs and meat. If you also grow crops, however, chickens can play an important role in helping to fertilize your farm, showcasing how farming can allow you to create a mutually beneficial environment.

Quails

Quails are a popular alternative to chickens since they are smaller and quieter. Although their eggs are smaller, they can still produce just as many as chickens.

Crops

While spinach and tomatoes are widely popular, depending on your climate and space, consider growing watermelon, fruit or fig trees, potatoes, corn, garlic and any of your other favorite fruits and vegetables.

You could also start a flower or lavender farm, grow loofahs or try aeroponics, hydroponics or aquaponics!

BEES

Starting your own apiary is beneficial to you and the environment. Although apiaries are popular among hobby farmers, beekeeping does require a bit of an investment in education and equipment before getting started.

Don't Forget!

The most important part of having a backyard hobby farm is to have fun and enjoy it! Things may not always go as planned, and every season may not be successful, but that’s okay. Take your time and embrace the process. It will all be worth it in the end when you’re enjoying your harvest!
